Only Time Will Tell

I know this is not going to come as a surprise to anyone who knows me or anyone who has played SWTOR and honestly I was really enjoying SWTOR for what it had to offer, but I think a mixture of circumstances has lead to me being bored at this point.

Funny enough those smart people over at Trion must have known that I was having second thoughts or maybe it could be because the SWTOR forums have been filled with nothing but complaints and upset since launch, either way they decided to hold a “Return to Telara” event from the 19-22 and from what I’ve seen on the forums and what I, personally, have experienced it was quite a good move on their part.

People seem to be returning in droves and it’s made the world of Telara a very lively place. It probably also helps that Trion has made a rather risky move and changed a good 15+ servers into “trial servers” for some event they’re planning on holding sometime in the future. People were initially really unhappy with losing their server-homes but I think it was a good move. The servers they chose were all low population and it made the other servers all the better by adding all these players in. More people to play and fight alongside/against. I certainly can’t complain about that!

I think the part that has me the most upset about this situation, however, is the fact that up until this point I have been playing the game with my husband and friends and having a good time with them but the truth of the matter is, I don’t associate well with the game or it’s setting. Let’s be honest here, I’ve always been a fantasy-esque person. I grew up reading fairy tales and believing in magic just like so many other females. It wasn’t until my late teens or early adulthood that I ever really started watching sci-fi-related things, so it comes as no surprise, but more of a disappointment that I don’t find myself enjoying the Star Wars universe.

My husband seems to understand where I’m coming from and has seemingly returned to the FPS Battlefield 3 and while my friends are still hanging on, if ever so slightly, to SWTOR, they seem to be playing it less and less every day.

The good news for SWTOR though, is that Bioware, regardless of their horrible customer service, does care about the game and their players opinions at least somewhat and so they are implementing a bunch of new things such as a guild bank, PvP rank system and UI scaling and limited customization.

Maybe given enough downtime away from the game I’ll want to return but in its current state I feel it still needs to mature a lot more before I can give it my full attention. While it feels very similar to World of Warcraft back in the vanilla-days truthfully after having so much content added to these older MMO’s over the years I must admit that it is slightly difficult to get into something that is lacking in content due to being so bran-spanking new.

Time will tell how Bioware chooses to handle the problems currently afflicting their game, but until I feel a bit more secure in my investment I will just have to play something else and from what I can tell, it’s going to be either RIFT or Lord of the Rings: Online for now.

Oh and while we’re on the topic of Lord of the Rings: Online I have some news on that front that I’m not super happy to be talking about because truthfully I never thought that Turbine would stoop so low, but they have taken it upon themselves to put stat-based armor on their cash shop. They assured their player base that this would never happen, that they would never allow people to buy power, but as usual, they’re in it for the money and not their fans/players.

I actually logged into my account to talk to my guild about it and see what they had to say on the situation. Most were indifferent at this point, saying that only time will tell where it goes from here, but they’re definitely worried that this will only be the beginning and that Turbine may have plans for more stat-related gear for things like Monster Play and raiding.

I’ll be honest, that’s pretty much what kept me from going back to the game after the SWTOR disappointment, because I’m not sure I want to play a game where people can buy power. Plus I was having so much fun with RIFT, I think it will be worth it to stick with this for now. My guild, Gaiscioch is totally awesome and the constant danger of the rifts make the game so exciting.

Time will tell what will happen with SWTOR and where I go from here, but I’m happy to keep reporting on my gaming, the games I’m playing and interested in and what I think on the subjects because it gives me something to do! Stay tuned.

SWTOR GU 1.1 ‘Rise of the Rakghouls’ Coming Jan. 17th!

I haven’t posted an update in so long because I have been utterly engrossed in Star Wars – the Old Republic since it’s launch. I have spent almost 200 hours in the game at this point and have really been enjoying myself.

The game, as any new MMO, has quite a few bugs that have been annoying to contend with, but aside from those the game has been really well designed. The voice overs are engrossing and well done, you can definitely see where Bioware spent the bulk of their money. I think my only big issue with the game at the moment is the lack of high res textures. People all over the official forums have been complaining about this and so far we haven’t heard from Bioware on the problem, aside from their acknowledgement that this is indeed a problem.

That said, they are rolling out bug fixes left and right and as of the 17th, about a day before the billing period begins, they will unleash their first content update ‘Rise of the Rakghouls’. In this content update they are expanding the already-existing “Karagga’s Palace” operation. Also, they’re adding a new flashpoint called ‘Kaon Under Seige’ and of course to top it off, they’ll have a nice cropping of bug fixes to roll out.

Make no mistake, SWTOR has it’s share of issues, but in my opinion they’re fairly minor and they will be worked out over the course of the next few months, just like any new MMO. I think people tend to forget that World of Warcraft is a seven year old game, with seven years worth of content, bug fixes and polish that a new game is simply not going to have. People are seriously not mindful of that, and I realize this the more and more I read the forums.

Quite frankly, if I wasn’t working on this blog now and then, I probably wouldn’t read the forum at all, because the people who complain there just make it miserable for everyone else who is enjoying the game. I mean clearly people have a right to voice their opinions, but its very difficult to see any good in the game if you base your opinion on those forums.

Hopefully BW will be quick in squashing bugs, fixing this annoying lack of high res textures problem and rolling out content updates swiftly to keep people interested. I look forward to seeing where the game goes from here.

SWTOR Early Access & Launch

It’s about that time where I must start eating my words. I’ve been playing SWTOR’s Early Access (since I pretty much missed out on the whole of beta) and I must admit a major addiction at this point.

I retract my earlier statement mentioning a similarity to World of Warcraft. The more I play, the more I realize that it really isn’t like WoW at all, in fact, the only similarity between the two (in my opinion) is the graphics are cartoony, but even that is on a different scale as SWTOR looks gorgeous and WoW’s polygon count is stale as far as characters go.

The story-driven gameplay is incredibly engaging and immersive. I’ve been unable to really do much else the last few days and now that Monday has come and the holidays are coming ever-so-quickly I am saddened by the fact that there are priorities ahead of playing Star Wars. All I can think of is getting back into the game and shooting my next target with my blaster or cutting off someone’s head and handing it to their wife.

There have been a significant number of complaints over the last few days regarding people feeling the game has “too many” cutscenes and somewhere my husband saw someone rattling on about lightsabers not being up to par. For every single one of these complaints I just laugh because Bioware has done something no one has ever ventured to do before, they’re giving us OPTIONS and choices in the game that changes our stories one way or another depending on what WE choose. Do I want to kill <Person A> or should I let her go? No. I’m going to shoot her in the face. Title: The Heartless. I mean, that’s the sort of thing that I love about this game, there are choices and options to be had, some of which actually give you light and dark points, making you a super-evil badass or a charming paragon of light. It’s up to you what you become.

I really didn’t think I was going to like this game. I was all set to write some post detailing the horrible experience I had in the game, just based on my terrible experience with their customer service team (and that still has never been fixed – I had to make a new account). But that isn’t what happened! The game has been incredible, I’ve been having an absolute blast. My husband who had all but given up on MMO’s as a whole decided to check it out on my account and we bought him a copy the next day. He’s so sucked in that he’s using that to cheer me up when I get angry about all this Christmas-crap I have to keep doing.

Tonight, they brought the servers down for maintenance and I thought he and quite a few of my friends were going to die from both boredom and broken hearts.

I figure it this way, if you’re bored with the current lot of MMO’s out there and you want something that is different, fun and engaging give this one a go. If you regret it, well… I don’t know what to tell you.

SWTOR – Worth A Look?

I was invited to the Star Wars the Old Republic beta months ago. However, due to some weird error in my account I was never able to give it a go. Bioware issued a password policy change in which it required everyone to create a new password for their account with at least one number and one capitalized letter. While this would never have been an issue, as I don’t mind complying with new policies, it seems that Bioware simply never wanted me to enjoy their game.  I tried to change my password via their directions at least fifty times and it gave me an error every single time.

I tried contacting their support team via e-mail which is what the directions said to do, as well as by phone, but unfortunately they never fixed the problem. They instead gave me a run around telling me that someone from Tier 5 support would get in touch with me in a day or two, that they were aware that I was having a problem but after waiting 2-3 weeks and calling back several times to check on the status, I found their support completely lacking. Half the time they had no idea what I was talking about, other times they told me that I would be contacted (again) by Tier 5 support and other times it was someone with an accent so thick that I couldn’t even understand what they were going on about.

This didn’t deter me, however. I do have some awesome friends that I’ve made over the years and one offered me an extra account that he had which was enrolled and accepted into the latest beta. I finally got a chance to check out the game and what I found wasn’t really what I was hoping to find, but what I knew I was going to find.

The Good

  • The graphics are nice. I’ve always been a fan of cartoony graphics because I feel that they can age better then realistic ones and they usually run better across a wider variety of machines.
  • The game is very story based which is kind of cool because you learn a lot and its quite engaging. However, you’ll find it is also a con as well.
  • Classes were pretty interesting from what I tried out. Naturally people will make a crap ton of Jedi Knights, but what can you expect from a Star Wars MMO? Everyone always wants to be a Jedi.
  • NPC Voice-overs are absolutely awesome, again very engaging and much different then the norm.
  • You choose your path via answering NPC’s and what you choose to do during your quests. This earns you light and dark points and it’s pretty cool.
  • I hear it has good PvP.
The Bad
  • While the fact that the game is story-driven which makes it engaging, you’ll quickly find that creating an alt will be a tedious task because while each class has its own story line, eventually you will end up converging where you always do and then the story is exactly the same as what you’ve played through before. After a while, this is bound to grow incredibly boring, as with any MMO. The difference is of course, you’ll have to sit through the same voice-overs.
  • Linear gameplay. The above is an example of what I mean by linear gameplay, but also I felt as though you were on rails with no real choice in where you go and what you do. You just jump from quest hub to quest hub and the lack of exploration is kind of obvious.
  • From what I gathered there are only four classes per side and I’ve been told they are completely mirrored on both sides, so absolutely no difference between them. This is kind of boring and not exactly what I was expecting from a Bioware title. I thought that there would be some variety here.
  • And the dreaded remark, but by now it should be expected. The game is very WoW-ish. People will probably want to burn me for saying that but the truth is the truth no matter how you try to disguise it. Clearly MMO’s have been doing this copy+pasta thing for a while because Blizzard made a large sum of money off of World of Warcraft. However, what many companies seem to fail to realize is that if we wanted to be playing World of Warcraft, that’s where we would be. Personally, I’m looking for something different. I guess if you really enjoyed World of Warcraft, you’ll probably enjoy SWTOR.
My conclusion to this is that I’ll probably give the game a go but I don’t have high hopes for longevity. I have already pre-ordered the standard edition (the first game I’ve not wanted a CE version of in quite some time – plus the price is outrageous) through Amazon and even though I had all these account problems that have not been fixed and I think the customer service is perhaps the worst in the industry that I’ve come across, I figure it’s at least worth a look. I’ve also used my second pre-order code (had to re-pre-order) on a new account so at least I’m set for early access which starts December 15th. But to be honest, if you’re looking for a new game with a new feel to it, this isn’t the one for you and I would continue to wait for Guild Wars 2 or The Secret World.
I apologize for the lack of any personal screenshots. The beta apparently prevented screenshots from being taken, so all I could use is FRAPS and I didn’t acquire that until I’d already decided to quit the game until launch.

Returning to Telara

I’m sure I’ve made it pretty clear by now in my postings that I have some kind of bizarre addiction to MMO’s, but not just to them, to MMO-hopping as a whole. I just can’t seem to stay put. I just get bored so easily!

After trying out Star Wars: The Old Republic and finding it not exactly to my liking (I plan to write a post on this subject shortly), I decided to take a trip back to a game that I detested during beta, enjoyed during launch and quit after two months because I am a fool. That game is RIFT, by Trion.

The moment I hopped in game, I immediately remembered why I enjoyed it so much and I’m still unsure of why I didn’t enjoy it during beta. I think I was playing a different game at the time and I didn’t want to hop, silly me. The graphics are stunning in my opinion; somewhere between a WoW & LotRO-style, both of which I always enjoyed though I can’t honestly say that WoW is stunning, I do enjoy it’s graphics for what they are, but that isn’t the reason I love the game. I really enjoy the rifts and events that are constantly going on. It keeps you on your toes, you’re simply not safe anywhere. I went AFK yesterday to run to the bathroom and when I got back, I was dead because an invasion spawned right on top of me. It was my stupidity for going AFK outside of a city, but this is the sort of thing that I honestly love. I love the danger.

Unfortunately upon my return I had to switch servers, which is easy since Trion provides free server transfers currently. My server Sunrest seemed all but dead, so I moved over to Faeblight and I have not regretted that decision one bit! I joined a really nice, active and astronomically enormous guild called Gaiscioch. They’re very friendly and helpful which is great because I had forgotten a lot of things while I was away from the game.

Another awesome bit is that they have their Fae Yule (Christmas) event going on. Lots of snowflakes, a Rudolph-esque companion, a rather disappointing (unfortunately) mount, but a ton of things to do and get and I’ve just had a blast coming back.

If you’re looking for a game unlike many, simply because of their rift system, I recommend giving RIFT a go.

Below I’ve included some screenshots of my recent gameplay!

Fallen Earth Free-to-Play

So Fallen Earth, one of my favorite games of all time, has gone  free-to-play like so many other games have been doing. I have to say that I’m not surprised by this news because the game was such a niche game that people seemed to have an issue giving it a try.

When I left the game there was only a handful of active people playing but when I logged in recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see every town I went to was completely packed with new players. The help channel was booming and it seemed like people were generally enjoying themselves. I was really happy to see such an amazing turn out for a game that I was sure was going to be dead within the next year. So happy in fact, that I re-subbed to it for a month to give it a good go.

It seems that they’re still working hard at improving things. While I was away on my honeymoon they launched a test server with faction territory control. Fallen Earth is supposed to be very PvP-oriented but anyone can tell you that the PvP is a bit short of the mark. We have six factions to be apart of yet there is no faction-oriented gameplay. Up until now, it’s been all RP-based so they have a lot of work to do in this area and this is hopefully just the beginning of that.

I’ll be keeping tabs on the game for a while, simply to see where it goes from here because I’ve always quite enjoyed it, myself.

If you haven’t tried it out yet, give it a go. It’s sort of an MMORPGFPS with a mix of traditional MMO with sandbox features. It really is a pretty awesome game.

Final Fantasy XIV 2.0

Today has started out as a bombshell of a morning.

I woke up, stuck some biscuits in the oven and went over to my PC to check the latest topics on the Final Fantasy XIV forums, which is usually an everyday affair. However, I was incredibly surprised by what I found. Several posts detailing information regarding subscriptions and something called Final Fantasy XIV 2.0. I started reading through all of the banter to find a mixture of excitement and of course your average naysayers as I opened up the following post: Final Fantasy XIV Version 2.0.

Naoki Yoshida, the game director, had released quite a “teaser” over night. It details a lot of new information including a schedule of upcoming patches and content changes but the real shocker that I don’t think anyone truly expected was that he announced an entirely new version of the game, complete with server overhaul, graphic overhaul and so very much more.

There are sadly, however, some things people are unhappy with. Subscription renewal. Square Enix has decided to re-instate their subscription at what will probably be around $12.99 a month. Many are not happy with having to pay for what they feel is an incomplete game. In a way I understand where they are coming from but these are also the same people who are upset that the game is incomplete and if unwilling to pay for their subscriptions how do they expect the money to come in for development? So far we have had one entire year of free access while they brought in a new development team, assessed the problems and began to fix them. I think that at this point it is a perfectly reasonable time to begin paying for them to continue development.

The other thing that people are unhappy with is the amount of time it will take to complete Yoshida’s schedule. The full launch of FFXIV isn’t expected until January 2013, over a year from now. Again, I understand the anger and disappointment in this area; the complaints are mainly that all of this content should have been completed by release but the fact of the matter is, we’re basically paying to play a beta for another year and if people don’t like doing that then they should let their subscription time run out and perhaps come back in a year when all of the changes and patches have been put through.

The good news, however, is that during this gigantic ball of changes, they’re actually, finally, implementing FFXIV for the PS3 which will bring a whole host of new players to the game. Those who do not have amazing machines to run the game on can simply hook up their PS3 consoles to their televisions and scratch their MMO-itch.

One of the cool things I noted in Yoshida’s teaser was the following, “Each update will deliver an unprecedented and unrepeatable game experience. For those of you continuing to play, I promise that the release of these updates and the eventual transition to the new FINAL FANTASY XIV will both come smoothly and seamlessly. ” This to me means that through the next year of development and changes we’ll actually be playing through a prequel of sorts, content that the new players a year from now and the PS3 players will never see. I think that is incredibly awesome because we’ll live through the back story as the game changes to version 2.0.

More good news for the players of today, “Character data and progress for players already playing the PC version will also be preserved, allowing those players to continue using their in-game avatars.” We’ll still be able to retain our current characters with the launch of 2.0 and after all 2.0 changes go into effect they are allowing players to completely re-customize, visually, their characters.

All-in-all I think the changes that are scheduled to be implemented will be absolutely amazing and I fully support Yoshida and the FFXIV Development Team in their ongoing efforts. So far we have a decent shell of a game that has so many possibilities and I fully believe that they will accomplish something amazing with Version 2.0.

FFXIV Return & Patch 1.19

I’ve decided that I’m going to give Final Fantasy XIV another go, since it’s free and all and the devs have been working their butts off to push out a new, improved and hopefully fun game.

So far I’ve noticed that combat is much improved with the addition of auto-attack. People didn’t seem very pleased about them adding this to the game, but it makes the combat so much faster and more enjoyable. They’ve been working on questing too it seems, changing the amount of Guild Leves and such that one can have and do in a set amount of time. Also, they’re apparently working on adding a new job class system (advanced classes, I’m gathering) for patch 1.20 or 1.21.

The new director, Yoshi, seems to be a pretty honest dude who is understanding, for the most part, what the players want and is doing a great deal of work to get it to them in a timely fashion. In response to a question regarding the state of the game and where he sees it at, he responded, “To be honest, I consider that we’re about half way to the point where we can confidently call it “FINAL FANTASY”.” That’s honesty. I mean, it’s definitely come a long way since launch, for sure, but its no where near what one would expect from a Final Fantasy title. I’m betting that by next summer we should see the game as it should have been at launch. I’m hoping that they’ll do a relaunch of the title at this point.

I wish game developers would stop pushing products so quickly. That is what killed Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and many other games out there. FFXIV is another that looked very close to being killed off as well, but thankfully Square Enix didn’t let that happen.

It’s definitely a game I could see myself playing for an extended period of time, provided that they actually fix it all up and make it worth playing.

They need to overhaul the lands in which we play, because they’re nothing but large empty zones with a ton of mobs and no life to them. There aren’t cute little towns or anything to explore along the way. Instead it’s just a camp plopped here and there and nothing of much interest. The zone’s landscape’s are repetitive and bland. I hope that they’re going to address this soon, because it’s one of the things, that for me, make it hard to play.

I still wish they had the traditional auction house, too. I understand that they wanted something more of a marketplace, but to be honest people are hardly using it as intended. The little market stands lay empty because they cost 500 gil per day to rent and why do that, when one can just stand in the middle of the room and accomplish the same thing? So now you’ve just got a bunch of player character zombies standing around selling items and lagging up the zone, sometimes resulting in crashes. At least they added a search feature, but what I’m a bit confused about regarding that as well, is if they “star” the appropriate vendors who have the item in which I’m looking for, is that across all zones or only the one I’m in at the time? I decided to search for a hat the other day and when it “starred” the player vendor with the item in question, I spent 20 minutes looking around for said vendor and found nothing. Perhaps it was in Limsa or Gridania instead? I have no idea.

Yoshi said that they were going to be adding solo-player combos and changing the regular combo system up a bit and that sounded quite promising. It should make combat even more fun and fast paced.

He also touched on the fact that they’re planning to add two new races, Demi Humans and Dragons, which leave me a bit baffled so I can’t wait to see what those look like, while also adding male Miqo’te and female Roegadyn. They’re actually on the “must have” list so I assume we’ll see those rather soon.

Also as a new addition with the patch of 1.19 is Chocobos (rented and purchasable) and airship rides from land to land for 2,500 gil a go. It’s a bit too expensive for me to just hop on and take a trip, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction towards feeling like a “Final Fantasy” title.
